Spades is a trick-taking card game played with teams of 2. You and Turing form Team 1; Babbage & Lovelace form Team 2.
Bidding & Contract
At the start of each hand, every player bids the number of tricks they expect to win. Partner bids are combined to form a team contract.
Scoring Rules
Making Contract:10 points per trick bid, plus 1 point per overtrick (bag).
Failing Contract (Set): If your team wins fewer tricks than bid, you lose 10 points per bid trick.
Nil Bid (0 Tricks): If a player bids 0 and wins 0 tricks, the team gains +100 points. If the player takes even 1 trick, the team loses -100 points.
Sandbagging Penalty Rule
Overtricks (tricks won beyond your contract) are called bags.
Sandbagging ON: Accumulating 10 total bags results in a -100 point penalty (Sandbag Penalty). After the penalty, 10 bags are deducted.
Sandbagging OFF: Overtricks award +1 point each, but no -100 point penalty is ever assessed.
Trump & Trick Play
Must follow led suit if possible. Spades (♠) are the permanent trump suit and beat all non-spade cards. Spades cannot be led until they have been "broken" by playing a Spade on a void suit.
